AI Overviews Are Cutting Your Clicks in Half. Here’s Why That’s Not the Whole Story.

New data from a large-scale study of Google searches confirms what many site owners have felt for months: when an AI Overview appears at the top of the results page, the click-through rate for the first organic listing drops by 58%, up sharply from the 34.5% drop measured back in April 2025. The effect fades but doesn’t disappear further down the page — position two is down 50.8%, and even position ten loses 19.4% of its clicks.

For businesses that built their whole visibility strategy around ranking #1, this is the number that should change the conversation. Being first in the traditional sense increasingly means being first underneath an AI-written summary that answers the question before anyone scrolls down to click.

The Traffic That Survives Is Different, and Better

Here’s the part most headlines skip: the clicks that do come through from AI Overviews and AI search platforms are not lower quality. Visitors arriving via generative AI results stay on-site roughly 8% longer, view 12% more pages, and are 23% less likely to bounce immediately compared to regular search referrals. Zero-click behavior is rising, but the traffic that survives has already been pre-qualified by the AI’s summary.

That changes the objective. Instead of chasing every click, the more useful goal is being the source an AI system chooses to cite and send traffic from, because that traffic converts better once it lands.

Rankings Are Necessary. They’re No Longer Sufficient.

Ranking well is still the entry ticket; Google’s AI Overviews still draw heavily from top organic results. But ranking alone no longer guarantees visibility, because the summary itself may fully answer the query before a human ever reaches your listing. Businesses now need content structured so an AI system can lift a clear, citable answer directly from the page, not just content that ranks.

This is exactly the shift we build for at Obsidian Pinnacle: sites structured so the answer is easy to extract and cite, not buried three paragraphs into a wall of text competing for the same ten blue links.

The Practical Move

Stop measuring success by rank position alone. Start tracking whether your content gets cited inside AI Overviews and AI Mode responses for the queries that matter to your business, and structure your key pages so the most important answer is stated clearly near the top, not saved for a big reveal at the end.

Want to know whether your site is positioned to get cited, or just to rank? Book a consultation and we’ll show you what AI search sees when it looks at your pages.
