For twenty years, the SEO question was simple: where do you rank on page 1? That question still matters, but it’s no longer the only one — or even the most important one.
The new question is: when someone asks an AI assistant about your category, are you the answer? That’s Share of Model — and in a recent category analysis, one brand captured 57% share of model, while its next two competitors sat at just 23% and 9%. Same market. Same keywords. Wildly different visibility, because visibility now happens inside the answer, not just above it.
Traditional SEO vs. Share of Model
Traditional SEO measures position: where a URL sits in a list of ten blue links, updated every time you check. Share of Model measures something different — how often an AI system names, describes, or recommends your brand when it generates an answer, regardless of whether a traditional “ranking” exists at all.
You can rank #1 for a query and still lose the share-of-model battle if the AI answer summarizes your competitor’s approach instead of yours. Rank and share of model are correlated, but they are not the same metric, and optimizing for one doesn’t automatically win the other.
Be Seen in the Answer, Not Just on Page 1 specific claims, real data, defensible expertise — rather than generic copy that reads like everyone else’s.
The brands at 23% and 9% aren’t necessarily worse at their jobs. They’re likely still optimizing purely for rank, while the leader is optimizing for citation.
Why This Is the Metric to Start Tracking
AI answers are where decisions increasingly begin — before a click, before a comparison page, sometimes before the buyer even opens a search engine tab in the traditional sense. If your share of model in your category is closer to 9% than 57%, that’s not a ranking problem you can fix with the usual playbook. It’s a visibility-inside-the-answer problem, and it needs to be measured on its own terms.
That starts with knowing your number. Most businesses have never checked.
