Most Shoppers Now Check Multiple Platforms Before Buying. Is Your Brand on All of Them?

The single-search-engine era is ending, and the data now makes it impossible to ignore. Online shopping across multiple devices

The single-search-engine era is ending, and the data now makes it impossible to ignore. New survey research covering 1,008 consumers and 150 marketers found that the average shopper checks 2.4 different platforms before making a purchase decision. That behaviour holds steady across every generation: Gen Z checks 2.5, baby boomers 2.2.

For businesses, this changes the core question. It is no longer “how do I rank on Google?” It is “is my brand present and consistent everywhere my customers look?”

Google Still Leads, But Not Everywhere

Google remains the default first stop for most categories: local businesses, product research, travel planning, and health questions. But the cracks are visible. YouTube now overtakes Google for how-to content. ChatGPT has become the second-most-used destination for health questions, and ranks second or third for product research and travel planning.

The takeaway is not that Google is finished; it clearly is not. The takeaway is that there is no single platform to optimise for anymore. Each query category has its own preferred destination, and a brand that only shows up in one of them is invisible for a growing share of real buying journeys.

Consistency Across Platforms Is the New Visibility

Here is the harder part: showing up on multiple platforms only helps if your brand is represented consistently across them. AI systems draw on different sources, and when those sources disagree about what your brand is, what it offers, or whether it can be trusted, the AI hedges or leaves you out.

This is why entity consistency matters so much now. Your business name, your core offerings, your location data, and your authority signals need to line up across your own site, third-party sources, and structured data. A brand that reads as coherent and credible across the web is the brand AI systems feel safe recommending.

Technical Foundations Still Decide Whether You Show Up At All

None of this works if AI systems cannot read your site in the first place. The platforms shaping these buying journeys rely on content they can parse, verify, and cite. Sites that hide core content behind heavy JavaScript, or that bury the answer beneath navigation and hero imagery, hand the advantage to competitors whose pages lead with clear, structured, machine-readable information.

This is the foundation we build at Obsidian Pinnacle: technically sound sites, consistent brand and entity signals across platforms, and content structured to be cited wherever your customers are searching, not just on one engine.

The Practical Move

Audit where your audience actually goes for each type of query you care about, then check whether your brand is present and consistent in each of those places. The businesses that map their presence to real customer behaviour, rather than chasing a single algorithm, are the ones that stay visible as search keeps fragmenting.

Want to know where your brand shows up, and where it is missing? Book a consultation and we will map your visibility across the platforms your customers actually use.
