For the past two years, measuring AI search visibility has been a workaround exercise: prompt tracking, third-party tools, manual checks across ChatGPT and Gemini. Today, that changes; partially.

Google launched dedicated Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on June 3, 2026. For the first time, you can see impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode directly in Google’s own platform, broken down by page, country, device and date.

What you won’t see: click data. Google is not reporting how many users clicked through from an AI response to your site.

What the Reports Actually Tell You

The new reports give you a dedicated view of your impressions within AI features: how often your content appeared inside an AI Overview or AI Mode response. That’s a meaningful signal. It tells you whether your content is being surfaced inside AI answers; which is the first step toward understanding your GEO performance without relying on third-party tools.

The absence of click data is notable; but not surprising. Early studies suggest around a third of SEOs would consider blocking their content from AI search features entirely, and Google has limited incentive to surface data that quantifies how much traffic AI responses are diverting.

For now, treat impression data as a directional signal. Pages with zero AI impressions need to be assessed for retrieval issues. Pages with high AI impressions but flat organic traffic are candidates for deeper investigation.

Publishers Can Now Opt Out; With Caveats

Also announced that same day: Google is testing a Search Console toggle that lets publishers block their content from AI Mode and AI Overviews entirely. The feature is currently live in the UK only, following a requirement from the Competition and Markets Authority that Google allow publishers to opt out of having their content used for AI fine-tuning.

For most clients, the default should remain opted in. Opting out removes the visibility upside without addressing the underlying content or attribution issues. It’s worth flagging to clients who have expressed concern about content usage; but not a recommended default position.

AI Content Detection Is Becoming Infrastructure

Separate from Search Console: Google announced that same week that SynthID; its imperceptible AI watermarking technology; is being adopted by OpenAI, Kakao and ElevenLabs. A growing share of AI-generated content across the web will now carry detectable markers.

This is not an immediate ranking signal. But it signals where the industry is heading. Clients producing high volumes of unedited AI-generated copy are building on a foundation that is becoming easier to identify. The businesses that use AI as a drafting layer while adding genuine expertise and editorial judgment are building the kind of content that ages well.
